FishAholics Fishing Challenge At The California Aqueduct: Part Two

It’s been about 4 months since I did part one of the FishAholics Fishing Challenge.  Life and a baby on the way has been keeping me very busy.  I’m sure you’ve probably forgotten what these challenges are all about so here’s a recap.

I asked in a survey to the FAm (You can join them HERE if you haven’t yet) what were some of the hardships they faced when they were out fishing.  The results of that survey revealed you needed more help about WHERE to fish, WHEN to go fishing and WHAT to use.  So I turned it into a fishing challenge where I became a guinea pig.

This challenge started at the California Aqueduct and will grow into other locations like lakes, reservoirs, rivers and the Delta.  For now, if you’re fishing the California Aqueduct, you’re going to want to read on.

In part one, you chose WHERE I should fish and the result of that can be found by HERE.

So in part two, you chose WHEN I should try the challenge.  The Mid-Day time slot was chosen (10am-3pm) by you.  This time slot is known to be one of the toughest and hottest so it was a challenge not knowing how the bite was going to be.  From reading previous posts on FishAholics and seeing previous catches at the ducts, I guesstimated that soaking bait would produce the best results.

With Bevis Cha on the hunt with me, we were ready to slay some fish.  The time and technique was set so we decided to try the north ducts.  We hit up check 11, a check gate north of Los Banos.

It was 10am, I had my setup rigged with a night crawler and threw it in.  First cast…Bamm.  I already hooked into one.  A little one but atleast I shook off the skunk.  Second cast, I felt the fish hit it on the fall.  As soon as the bait hit bottom, my rod bent right over.  Instinctively, I set the hook for a keeper sized striper.  It was consistent action throughout the challenge.

We caught over 50 fish with a few catfish in the mix.  The majority of the fish caught were undersized but they kept us busy and entertained.  I held onto my rod the majority of the time.  The fish were biting on the fall, on the bottom and even while dragging the bait.  Checkout the video for all the action.

Stay tuned for part three of this fishing challenge.  This time the FAm will choose WHAT I should be using and I’ll try n figure out WHEN and WHERE I should be fishing.

Where specifically is this spot? I’ve tried a few spots (McCabe Road North to Cottonwood) and don’t seem to have found this spot.
